Pope Francis Warns of Satan; Media, Take Heed!

Western liberal media have molded a caricature of Pope Francis as a kind socialist who turns a blind eye to hedonistic sins and embraces modern liberal culture.  Thus, any time the pope presents himself as a Catholic theologian, the media is mute -- like when he speaks of the Devil!
“The prince of this world — the Devil — exists even in the 21st century. And we shouldn’t be naive . . .”
-- Pope Francis

“Had Pope Benedict [spoken like] this, the media would have clobbered him.”
-- Vatican City senior bishop
For background, read the typical fallacious media headlines of the pope:

Pope Francis warned followers during a Friday homily that Satan is alive and kicking in the 21st century and that Catholics should always be on guard.

The Pope drew from the Biblical story of Jesus’ temptation while speaking to assembled congregants at his Santa Marta residence, just outside of the Vatican.

Although some may think it’s “old fashioned” of him to talk about the spirit world in the 21st century, Pope Francis said it’s important to be vigilant.

Largely under the radar, theologians and Vatican insiders say, Francis has not only dwelled far more on Satan in sermons and speeches than his recent predecessors have, but also sought to rekindle the Devil’s image as a supernatural entity with the forces of evil at his beck and call.

Since its foundation, the church has taught the existence of the Devil. But in recent decades, progressive priests and bishops, particularly in the United States and Western Europe, have tended to couch Satan in more allegorical terms. Evil became less the wicked plan of the master of hell than the nasty byproduct of humanity’s free will. Even Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, a lofty German theologian, often painted evil with a broad brush.

Enter the plain-talking first pope from Latin America, where mystical views of Satan still hold sway in broad areas of the region. During his time as cardinal of Buenos Aires before rising to the papacy, Francis was known for stark warnings against “the tempter” and “the father of lies.” Now, his focus on the Devil is raising eyebrows even within the normally unquestioning walls of Vatican City.

But by focusing on old-school interpretations of the Devil, some progressive theologians complain, the pope is undermining his reputation as a leader who in so many other ways appears to be more in step with modern society than his predecessor.

From "Pope Francis Warns Satan Exists in 21st Century; Says Christians Live in Constant Battle Against Evil" by Stoyan Zaimov, Christian Post Reporter, 4/11/14

Satan, [Pope Francis] said, does not want people to be disciples of Christ, and wants to distance believers from Jesus.

"The temptation of the devil has three characteristics and we need to learn about them in order not to fall into the trap. What does Satan do to distance us from the path of Jesus? Firstly, his temptation begins gradually but grows and is always growing. Secondly, it grows and infects another person, it spreads to another and seeks to be part of the community. And in the end, in order to calm the soul, it justifies itself. It grows, it spreads and it justifies itself."

The pope warned that people need to be cautious and refuse to allow the initial temptation they are faced with to spread to others. "We are all tempted because the law of our spiritual life, our Christian life is a struggle: a struggle. That's because the Prince of this world, Satan, doesn't want our holiness, he doesn't want us to follow Christ."

In a separate speech on Friday, Francis addressed another "evil" in the face of clerical sexual abuse, promising victims that the church will continue fighting against such crimes.

UPDATE 5/14/14: "Pope Francis: Satan’s ‘Greatest Achievement...Has Been to Make Us Believe He Does Not Exist’" by Michael W. Chapman, CNSNews.com

“I believe that the Devil exists,” said the future Pope, then-Cardinal Jorge Bergolio, in his 2010 book, On Heaven and Earth, which was re-published in April 2013 with the subtitle, Pope Francis on Faith, Family, and the Church in the Twenty-First Century.

The Devil, said the Pope, is “a being that opted not to accept the plan of God. The masterpiece of the Lord is man; some angels did not accept it and they rebelled. The Devil is one of them.”

Jesus defines the Devil “as the Father of Lies, and the book of Wisdom says that sin entered the world through the Devil’s envy of God’s masterpiece,” said Pope Francis. “His fruits are always destruction: division, hate, and slander.”

Commenting further on the Devil, the pontiff said, “Man’s life on Earth is warfare; Job says it meaning that people are constantly put to the test; that is to say, a test to overcome a situation and overcome oneself.  … The Christian life is also a sort of sport, a struggle, a race where one has to detatch oneself from the things that separate us from God.”
