The Freedom From Religion Foundation is suing the Cherry Creek School District over a civics program that the foundation links to a Lutheran Scripture-based code of conduct.

The 40 Developmental Assets urge students to, among other things, spend an hour or more a week in religious community. This, the foundation alleges, is using taxpayer dollars to promote religious values.

For example, Asset 5, advocating a "caring school climate," is related by the institute to Jesus' teaching in Mark 9:37: "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name, welcomes me."

Although the school district doesn't disseminate the scriptural references underlying the program, foundation attorney Bob Tiernan said, the schools are still advancing the religious values of a specific sect.
